Être byzantin, cela signifie être habitant de l'Empire Byzantin (l'ancien Empire Romain d'Orient). Être grec signifie être habitant de différentes cités grecques, comme Athènes, Sparte, ou Corinthe. Être chrétien signifie habiter dans l'occident chrétien (l'actuelle Europe Occidentale) et être de religion chrétienne. Être romain fut habiter dans l'Empire romain qui longeait toute la Méditerranée.
