Yes, I agree with the voters that Marygoround’s answer is the best.
Indeed, homecoming is a big celebration who usually takes place in fall where former students, actual students, teachers and all the school’s staff attend to. First, people watch the football game with the traditional dance of the pom-poms girls and then old and new high schoolers partying together. Depending on your school, you can have a dress code. And the purpose of this, is to celebrate this season of the year and the comeback to school for all students which also brings a lot of happiness, enthusiasm, and excitement.

Homecoming is called homecoming because of the signification.
In fact the word is constituted by 2 words: Home (and) coming

Home: meaning the place you consider you house or also where your heart belongs to.

Coming: meaning the the way you take to get somewhere

And the association of the two means then, the return to your home
