Charles became a popular animal painter specializing particularly in sentimental portraits of dogs, often with children. His works range from actual photographic reproduction with a quick sketch. In 1883 he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Petroleum Painters. He exhibited at the Royal Institute of Petroleum Painters, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Academy from 1866 to 1893. He received his final commission by Queen Victoria in 1894 and a few months later, he is dead.
