In the 1920’s, a Harlem bar called « Small’s Paradise » was a jazz club and dance hall. The owner and manager was Edwin Smalls. The club had a great reputation, so a lot of people came. This club was primarily for white people. This jazz club was one of the most famous and prestigious African-American owned venues. Small’s Paradise opened on October 26, 1925. The huge success of the club was due to the fascination that many whites at the time had with black culture. In the spring of 1961, Ed Smalls sold the Paradise to basketball player Wilt Chamberlain, who renamed it "Big Wilt's Small's Paradise".

In the 1970s, Big Wilt's Small's Paradise opened to other types of people and played rock and disc concerts. It closed in 1986. Today it is a restaurant of the "International House Of Pancakes" (IHOP) chain.
