The island of Poveglia is, par excellence, the place that we try to avoid at all costs when we come to spend a romantic stay in the city of lovers. Located in the lagoon of Venice, this small island enjoys such a terrible reputation that some fishermen refuse to venture there, by superstition. And we can understand them! Through the ages, Poveglia has been the rendezvous of all the Venetians struck by fate. In the 16th century, the island was transformed into a lazaret, a place of isolation for the sick of the plague, and thus would have become the last home of 160,000 people. The island remained a quarantine site until the Second World War, when it was occupied by the troops and used to store the bodies of the victims.
