1) The characters are Jay, Gloria, Manny, Claire, Mitchell, Cameron and Lily.
Gloria is Jay's second wife, Manny is Gloria's son from another marriage.
Jay's children, who are all grown up and have their own families; Claire and Mitchell. Claire is married and has three children. Mitchell is married to Cameron and has an adopted Vietnamese daughter named Lily.
3.) It doesn't reflect other American's reality, simply because it isn't the "atypical" family you'd think they are. Jay is divorced, Mitchell is gay and has an adopted Vietnamese daughter. Although there isn't anything wrong with that, others may see this as "out of the norm".
