Bonjour,
In 1910, the Union of South Africa was created.
In 1948, the government decided to make a legal difference between racial groups : it was called apartheid.
Nelson Mandela was a black leader opposed to apartheid
He was arrested many times and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964. He spent 26 years in prison and became a symbol of pacific opposition to apartheid. In 1976, many young people protested against discrimination were killed.
In 1989, Frederick De Klerk became President. He was against apartheid In 1990, Mandela was freed.
In 1993, De Klerk and Mandela received the Nobel Prize.
