Bonjour,
1. When Muhammad Ali was a child, black people were not allowed to sit with white people in buses. They had to sit at the back , while white people sat at the front (so that they could get off the bus more quickly in case of an emergency evacuation).
This was called The Chicago boycott
2. This newspaper covers the tragic death of 14-year-old Emmett Till,an African American from Mississippi. He was brutally lynched / killed in 1955 by white people, supposedly for flirting with a white woman. The crime was rightly recognized as a murder by many Americans, but the all-male, all-white jury declared the assailants not guilty .
3. Malcolm X (1925-1965) was a civil rights activist who encouraged African Americans to fight inequalities "by any means necessary". Indeed, in the speech he delivers in the film Ali, we can hear him say: "your times will never get better unless you make them better." and "we don't teach you to turn the other check."
