Alfred Hitchcock was an engineer. In 1920, he joined the company Famous Players Lasky (a subsidiary of Paramount in London) where he was responsible for subtitling silent movies. Thanks to this experience, he familiarized himself with the world of movies. In 1922, he made his first attempt at directing with “Number thirteen”, which he never finished. With “The Pleasure Gardenr” (1925), he signed his first movie. His style and his favorite themes developed with “The Lodger” (1926) and “Chantage” (1929). He became famous in England with films such as “The man who knew too much” (1934), “The 39 Steps” (1935), “Secret Agent” (1936) and “The Lady vanisches” (1938).
On the eve of the war, he already had a solid reputation. David O. Selznick invited Hitchcock to Hollywood where he decided to settle. The first film of his American period, “Rebecca” (1940), was a huge success. Unlike many filmmakers, he tried above all to seduce, manipulate and surprise the audience. He became the master of suspense adulated by people as well as by critics while he claimed only entertainment.
The 50s was a prolific period in which he produced masterpieces such as “Vertigo” (1958), “North by Northwest” (1959), “Psycho” (1960) and finally “The Birds” (1963). The success of Hitchcock was also due to the choice of its actors, James Stewart, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly who knew how to carry his movies in a higher level. Another significant factor is the composer Bernard Herrmann, who created the music for all his films from 1957. His compositions were in perfect harmony with the Hitchcock atmosphere.
The second half of the 1960s was marked by movies such as “Marnie” (1964) and “Torn Curtain” (1966). In 1972, he shot “Frenzy”, his first British "thriller" after more than 30 years in the United States. “Family Plot” (1976) was his last work. With 54 movies, Hitchcock has established himself as the undisputed master of suspense and anxiety.
