In 1834, Faraday studied
electrical current in
liquids. He put two differ-
ent pieces of metal called
electrodes into a solution.
As he saw one electrode
being destroyed (anode),
and the other one getting
bigger (cathode), he
thought that matter was
moving through the solu-

knew that it is electrically
charged. He also discovered that two types of ions
