1 Hello, my name is Luke and I am 27 years old. I work as a lorry driver for a national distributor firm based in Wickford, Essex. This job is ideal if you don't want to be stuck in an office all 5 day. You are responsible for the safe delivery of goods, keeping your vehicle in good condition, loading and unloading the vehicle and taking the quickest route to your destination (so map reading is always an advantage). It's that simple! For me, the worst thing is the long, unsociable hours and the animosity we get from the general public when we're in 10 their way. I generally work an average of 48 hours per week, but I can't spend more than nine hours per day on the road. It is quite well paid for a job where you almost don't see your boss. I earn £31,000 per year. You must be aged 18 or over, have a clean driving licence and pass a medical test to work as an LGV (large goods vehicle) driver. You'll also need a few certificates, including 15 holding a LGV license in categories C (smaller, rigid vehicles) or C+E (larger, articulated vehicles). A Certificate of Professional Competence is necessary - a practical and theory test taken every five years to prove a driver's suitability. Basic motor maintenance skills would also be useful. I love this job as it gets you driving and exploring the country all in the name of work.
