Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England, and, as he himself recalled anecdotally, he was born three hundred years to the day after the death of Galileo, who himself died on January 8, 1642. He is the son of Dr Frank Hawking (1905-1986), a research biologist, and Isobel Hawking (1915-2013), a political activist. He has two younger sisters, Mary and Philippa, and an adopted brother, Edward. Her parents lived 30km north of London until the day they moved to Oxford, Isobel was then pregnant with Stephen, and they wanted a safer place for the birth of their first child (London was under attack by the Luftwaffe) . According to one of Hawking's publications, a V-2 missile exploded a few blocks from where they were.
