What are the limits of beauty and youth ?
J'avoue ne pas avoir trop compris celle-ci non plus
Read the text and tell : who, where, when, what ?
WHO : Lord Henry, Dorian Gray, and a painter called Hallward (un peintre du nom de Hallward)
WHERE : in the painter's workshop (dans l'atelier du peintre)
WHEN : modern times (temps modernes)
WHAT : the painter just finished Dorian Gray's portrait, Lord Henry told him to come see it and Hallward is waiting for his reaction, as Dorian Gray is admiring the result but also is sad, thinking about how he finds himself very good for now but he knows one day he'll be old and ugly.
Spot the words expressing positive emotions
pleasure, joy, beauty, revelation, loveliness
Now, spot the verbs and adverbs which show how Dorian reacts
passed listlessly, turned towards, drew back, flushed, had recognized himself, stood there, not catching, he had never felt, he stood gazing, flashed across him
Compare these two columns and deduce how does he feel about the painting? What does he think of
it?
Il doit manquer une deuxième image avec un tableau je pense
What does this portrait reveal to Dorian Gray about himself?
He finds himself lovely and is happy for that, but he realizes at the same time that one day, he'll be old and "ugly" (for him). He knows "his face would be wrinkled and wizen", "his eyes dim and colorless", "the grace of his figure broken and deformed" etc...
How would you describe Dorian Gray?
I would describe him as someone shy, with a lack of self-confidence, not sure about himself, but he seems kind because of all that.
Can you explain his reaction? Why does he have this particular reaction to the portrait?
He found himself so lovely and handsome on the painting that in contrast, he's even more afraid to be ugly later.
