1- The customers were entering the hall when they felt everybody was  looking at them.

2- Suddenly, the inn's owner went out of the back room  where he was having a nap.

3- Some men were playing cards in the living room when a man rushed out into the inn.

4- Most of people started panicking because the man was bleeding.

5- Women screamed when they saw the man's blood was dropping on the floor.

6- The customers decided not to stay. The situation was getting too dangerous.

ces deux prétérits sont des temps du passé.

Le prétérit simple pour une action passé, soudaine.

Le prétérit Be + ing pour une action passée qui était en cours.

quand les deux sont employés dans la même phrase, il y a une action en cours interrompue par une autre....
ex = they were having dinner when the phone rang.
