This is an exploration journey: the goal is to explore and know more about Louisiana
Thomas Jefferson was on of the U.S historical presidents, he purchased Louisiana territory form France. Meriwheter Lewis was the commandant of the Corps of discovery (the exploration) he had to map the new territory, make contacts with its inhabitants.
What they want is to explore, in peace (no war) therefore they want to know more about their new state: “Their purpose was peaceful - exploration, diplomacy and science”
They were successful in that exploration: “The expedition returned with a great deal of knowledge about the new territory west of the Mississippi”
The difficulties they had was that they had a few important contributions to make for that state.
