- pour parler des événements du passé, ou pour présenter des faits révolus on peut utiliser le PRETERIT SIMPLE
- A la forme affirmative, on le construit en ajoutant ED ou IED à l'infinitif des verbes réguliers.
- Aux formes interrogatives et négatives on ajoute l'auxiliaire DID avec tous les verbes sauf BE qui se suffit à lui même. Puisque c'est l'auxiliaire qui prend la marque du PRÉTÉRIT ( did ) on met le verbe à l’infinitif.
- Quand le mot interrogatif est sujet, la question se construit sans l'auxiliaire DID, comme une phrase affirmative.
