Slavery in America started in the 17th century and it ended in 1865 when the Civil war stopped by the Nord.

The first slaves in the American colonies arrived on a Dutch ship in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. They left from Africa to work on the tobacco or carton fields: plantations.

They didn't set sail freely to America. Whole families where in there villages.

The crossing of the Atlantic, called *the Passage*, was terrible : Slaves would go into dirty ships like cargo, they were unable to move, and many died due to disease and starvation.

Life on Plantation was awful.

The slaves would work from sunrise to sunset and they ? or ? by the overseer for not working hard enough of for showing up late in the fields. According to the SLAVES CODES slaves owners had absolute power over the slaves and slaves had no rights. Thus the slaves needed to read or to write.

They needed for  a slave's work, they would hide and they couldn't have weapons and leave the plantation.

voilà, désoler pour la dernier phrase
