Extinction occurs when species are diminished because of environmental forces (habitat fragmentation, global change, natural disaster, overexploitation of species for human use) or because of evolutionary changes in their members (genetic inbreeding, poor reproduction, decline in population numbers).

Since 1963, the IUCN Red List has listed endangered or extirpated species. In 1988, all known species of birds had been assessed by IUCN as well as in 1996, the conservation status of all species of mammals.

Of the 5,205 species described in the 1996 edition, 25% of mammals and 11% of birds were classified as threatened. In 2006, the IUCN considered that one in four mammal species, one in eight bird species, and one third of amphibians were threatened. Currently, an animal or plant species disappears every seventeen minutes.
