In Ireland, in County Dublin, in 1964.
During a marriage, Margaret is raped by her cousin. Shame falls on the whole family. In the early morning, the parish priest comes to pick up Margaret.
Bernadette is a resident in an orphanage. Growing up, becoming pretty, she arouses the envy of the young people of the neighborhood. Considering that her nature and character destine her for the worst, the management of the orphanage then entrusts her to the only institution capable of keeping her on the right path.
Rose, who is not married, has just given birth to a baby boy. Separated from her baby, she was taken to the convent of the Sisters of Mary Magdalene.
The three young women are immediately confronted by Sister Bridget, who runs the establishment and explains to them how, through prayer and work, they will atone for their sins and save their souls.
