Once upon a time there was a girl who lived / was living in a small village near
Cardiff, in Wales. One evening while she read / was reading a book in her bedroom,
she heard / was hearing a noise outside her room. It didn't sound / wasn't sounding
like the radio or TV, so she stood up / was standing up and went / was going out
of her room to the top of the stairs. When she went / was going downstairs, she
noticed / was noticing that the lights in the house were off, which was strange,
so she looked / was looking for the light switch in the dark. Suddenly, somebody
