in 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was legal for school to be segregated: there could be schools just for white children and school just for black children. Over 50 years later, in 1954, a lawsuit was brought to the Supreme Court and segregation in school was declared unconstitutional But when the first black students arrived in some white only schools, people tried to prevent them from entering in Arkansas, soldiers were even deployed to stop them!
