D- Well, first of all, I'm going to ask you a few question about your life style, your eating habits and so on ...
M. W. = Fine, anything that might help you.
D- Are you smoking ?
M. W = Well, I'm trying to stop, but I haven't succeeded yet. I used to smoke up to two packs a day , but I have cut down a lot.
D. : and so , now, how many cigarettes a day ?
M. W. : let's say one pack maximum.
D. Well I'll help you to go below one pack. Do you often drink alcohol ?
M. W. ; I like going to the pub with my friends on weekends, and when I come back at home in the evening, after work, I enjoy a glass of porto, no more.
D. : No more, but that's an habit you're developping without being aware of it. You drink a glass, probably sometimes more, every evening, and then you go every weekend to the pub. That's how your body starts to be used to alcohol on certain time of the day. If you don't have your porto in the evening , how do you feel ??? You've got to be aware of this....
Then I guess, you might have a glass or two of wine at dinner...
M.W = Em.... well, yes, I do drink wine ..
D.: Well, let me tell you : it's oK to drink ocasionally but don't let your body be used to alcohol every day. That's how start most of the addictions...
Let's talk about your eating habits....
M.W. : I get out of work pretty late, so on my way home, I either buy food to go, hamburgers or Chinese food, either frozen dishes... whatever.
For lunch, we usually go to the pizzeria... And when I watch TV after dinner, I am sometimes craving for popcorn, biscuits, chips, things I presume I should'nt eat
D. : So no veggies, no fruits, only processed food...
M.W. : But I don't have time to cook....
D. : Oh yes, you have !!! On weekends, go shopping fresh products, you have plenty of time to cook them and then you can put them in boxes in the freezer. You'll have your amount of vitamins, proteins ... and meals for the week.
Food to go, frozen food are processed food. It contains too much saturated fats, sugar, and this increases blood pressure, heart failures , cholesterol and all a bunch of disease you don't want to have....
M. W : Ok doctor, I am going to be much more carefull.
D. I hope so. Come back in a month, and we'll see how you have manage to change. Remember, we eat to live, but we don't live to eat... Think about it next time you're watching TV and you're thinking of chips or popcorn !
