= Quand nous avons téléphoné à 8 heures, il n'y avait pas de réponse. Ils étaient sortis.
b. There was water everywhere when I came in. What happened ?
= Il y avait de l'eau partout quand je suis entré. Que s'est-il passé ?
c. When they arrived at the cinema, the film had already begun.
= Lorsqu'ils sont arrivés au cinéma, le film avait déjà commencé.
