Racism is a phenomenon and ideology caused by a number of circumstances. Ignorance and lack of exposure are two common factors that may contribute to such a thing. When a person is ignorant of other racial groups and cultures, of their own culture, and of general realities of the world and its populations, they can easily be swayed/manipulated by others into giving in to hatred. Racism is also caused by fear and prejudice. Fear of the unknown has been a trait of humankind for nearly all of its relevant history. Lack of exposure to a particular group of people may contribute to one's forming of prejudices (without experience to contradict them) and amplify the natural tendency of man to fear the unknown. Additionally, influential people and leaders have historically been shown to hold a degree of power over the populace. Their words can either reduce or propagate these types of prejudices. Racism can have dire consequences; it may result in terrible disasters, contribute to wars, lead to genocide, and cause oppression. Possible solutions lie in educating oneself and others, including future generations, about other racial groups, justice, prejudice and the harm it causes... Electing and supporting responsible and educated leaders is another important measure that should be taken to extirpate racism from society.
