On 7 June 1990, barely four months after his release, on 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela was here at the headquarters of the Communist Party, hosted by Georges Marchais. At the age of 72, the one who was not yet the President of the Rainbow Nation had come as a brother to show his gratitude to our party, and to all those who, at its side, had embraced the fight against apartheid and for its liberation, 27 years of a tireless battle, finally victorious, and 42 years since the establishment of apartheid in 1948.

That of a young South African black lawyer, that of an activist of the Charter of Freedom adopted by the People’s Congress in 1955, in Soweto, that of a revolutionary who made the choice of armed struggle, when the tyranny of apartheid closed all the doors of non-violence, that of a political leader who crosses with courage and without hatred 27 years of imprisonment and imprisonment, that of the first South African President elected by a non-racial democratic vote, symbol of the union of a people in its struggle for freedom, peace and a new South Africa.
