Chapter 1 :
In 1922, when he was still a very young child, the narrator played in the garden of "La Belle Angerie", the family home. He falls on a sleeping viper and grabs her by the neck. He strangles her with an iron fist, making a comparison to Hercules killing two snakes in his cradle.
This face-to-face foreshadows the relationship that will be established between young Rezeau and his mother.
Chapter 2 :
“La Belle Angerie” has been the home of the Rezeau family for over two centuries. It is a set of buildings in poor condition, with a main house of thirty-two rooms with Spartan comfort.
Jean Rezeau, the narrator makes a genealogy of his family: his great-uncle, René Rezeau, member of the Académie Française, is the family glory; her paternal grandmother, Marie Rezeau had eleven children from her husband Ferdinand, including Jacques Rezeau, Jean's father.
Jacques married Paule Pluvignec in 1913. She came from a wealthy family and brought a substantial dowry to the penniless Rezeaus. From this marriage were born three children: Ferdinand alias Frédie or Chiffe, Jean or Brasse-Bouillon and Marcel nicknamed Cropette.
Jean explains that he and his older brother were entrusted to the good care of their grandmother Marie while their parents left for China, where Jacques Rezeau is a professor of law. Marcel was born in Shanghai.
Jean recounts his education strongly marked by religion and childish piety.
Chapter 3:
The happy, perfectly settled existence of Jean and his brother is turned upside down by the death of their grandmother. A strong woman with a strong character, she succumbs with dignity and leaves a tender and severe memory to her grandson Jean.
His death announces the arrival of Jean's mother.
Chapter 4:
Frédie and Jean, accompanied by Miss Ernestine the governess and Countess Bartolomi, their aunt, come to welcome their parents at Segré station. It's been eight months since their grandmother died and they can't wait to see their parents again and meet Marcel.
As soon as she got off the train, Madame Rezeau slaps her sons who were trying to kiss her. They discover their father and their younger brother behind her. Frédie and Jean feel that things have not finished looking up.
Chapter 5:
Presentation of the reunited Rezeau family.
Jacques, the father, is forty-five years old. Brown and mustached, he has a slim physique. He is a fearful and sickly being who takes refuge in his readings.
Paule, the mother, is thirty-five years old and seems to have been a beautiful woman. She has a nimble hand over her children and is particularly passionate about philately.

Chapitre 2 :
