The story took place at the Palace of Versailles where the body of a young woman was found in the ditches of the garden. Inspector Picard in charge of the investigation initially thought of an accident, but the appearance of an unexpected witness changed the focus of the investigation. A man named George-Henri went to the police station after reading an article in Le Figaro talking about the murder. He informed the inspector that he had seen on the day of the accident a tall and thin woman, running at full speed and coming from the moat where the body was found. The inspector decided to ignore his testimony because he was poorly dressed and his hair was long and dirty. Poor George had hoped to receive a reward for his testimony; suddenly he saw fit to turn to the journalist who wrote the article. Two days later, Inspector Picard found himself with a second murder, that of poor George-Henri. After Inspector Picard's investigation, it turned out that the journalist himself was responsible for both crimes.
