Nelson Mandela is one of the most famous symbols of the struggle for human rights of our time, a man whose dedication to the freedom of his people has inspired human rights defenders around the world . Born in Transkei, South Africa, the son of a tribal chief, Mandela received a university degree and a law degree. In 1944, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and worked actively to abolish the apartheid policy of the ruling party. Judged for his actions, Mandela said: "I fought against white domination and I fought against black domination. I cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all people live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which I wish to live and which I hope to fulfill. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, Mandela became the symbol of growing resistance to apartheid, repeatedly refusing to compromise his political position to gain his freedom.
