Sagot :
Mary Anderson was born in 1866 in the United States. In November 1903, she obtained a patent for an automatic device for cleaning car windows controlled from inside the vehicle: the wiper.
During a visit to New York in the winter of 1903, on a streetcar, she observed that the machinist was forced to drive with the window open because of ice pellets forming on the windshield. When she returned to Alabama, she hired someone who could develop a hand-held device to clean a windshield and asked a local company to produce a prototype. She obtained a 17-year patent for this wiper. His device consisted of a lever inside the vehicle which controlled a rubber blade outside the windshield. The lever was actuated to cause the spring arm to move on the windshield. A counterweight was used to ensure contact between the glass and the glass. Similar devices had already been proposed, but that of Anderson is the first to have been effective.
The windshield wiper, although many innovations have been made, remains today a compulsory accessory on practically all motor vehicles. We can therefore thank Mary Anderson for allowing us to drive safely and visibly in bad weather conditions!
