In this report we will describe the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. This hurricane hit the South East coast of the United States in late August 2005. It is known as the costliest hurricane in American history because oil and gas industry operations were paralyzed and the tourism industry seriously damaged from the loss of infrastructure. A mandatory evacuation was issued for the city of New Orleans but unfortunately many residents stayed. Many of them were poor, old and lacked access to transportation. Some were able to make their way to the Superdome which is the city’s sports arena. The authorities believed that New Orleans would be spared but a levee broke and flooding spread to the low-lying town. The authorities estimated that 80 percent of the city was underwater. The city remains at risk from another large storm. Flood defence systems are still being built to prevent damages.
