Ireland WAS a British colony for a long time.
Irish nationalists REFUSED to be controlled by Britain so they FOUGHT against the British government.
When the civil war ENDED, the southern part of Ireland GAINED independence but the counties in the North REMAINED under British control.
The conflict WAS NOT ( WASN’T ) over.
