We learn in this scene that the narrator comes from a poor black family. He lives with his family in the South only with black people. Black people had to work hard. They went to church on Sundays and that was great for them. He was very good at school and he was found of reading.

But on the other hang his experience at the library was awful, he « remember(ed) (his) heart catching, (He) forgot how to breath » . He was extremely hurt, the librarian attitude and her words « brought tears into (his) eyes.
