Finn Mac Cool or

Fionn Mac Cumhaill

The legendary Finn Mac Cool.

Legendary hero in Ireland, Finn MacCool or Finn Mac Cumhal, or Fionn Mac Cumhaill, is directly associated with the creation of the Giants Causeway. He was a gigantic and formidable warrior.

Finn is featured in many legends.

The many adventures of the giant.

There are many stories about Finn mac Cool because the people at Antrim like to remember them. They tell his adventures without restraint and recall the courage, intelligence, strength and sometimes even the bad character of the hero. For example, he happened to change his mother into a rock because she laughed at his slowness in creating his pavement, as gigantic as it was. Another vindictive pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne.

During his childhood, Finn was raised by the druidess Bodhmall, sister of the Cumhal, and the warrior Liath Luachra, in the forest of Sliad Bladma where he learned hunting and the arts of war. After offering his services to several Irish kings, he met the poet Finegas who took him under his wing.

(See Finegas and salmon).

Finegas had long embarked on the quest for the Salmon of Knowledge; this wonderful fish that has all the knowledge of the world. To Finegas's dismay, it was Finn who unintentionally first tasted the fish when they caught it. He was thus endowed with fabulous powers and decided to resume his legitimate place at the head of the Fiannas, these fabulous warriors.

To do this, he had to go through many adventures and above all he had to defeat Tara's dragon! (Article to be published).

His most famous adventure remains his meeting with the Scottish giant Benandonner in County Antrim.
