Bonjour,
The 1995 Rugby World cup final is over. After the Springboks victory Nelson Mandela ( president of South Africa ) and François Pienaar ( team captain ) are invited for an interview.
Journalist : Good evening. We are proud to have both of you this evening. First of all I would like to congratulate. What a game ! Mr Mandela, what do you think about the game ?
Mandela: Good evening. It was a great game. I was in the stadium and was very impressed by the team.
Journalist: Mr Pienaar, as a player, what are your impressions ?
Pienaar: Pride ! I am extremely proud of what happened. Not only we have won the game but also because of what president Mandela did. As you all know, he wore my rugby jersey !
Mandela: I also wore the cap ! That day, many people didn’t give much chance for the team to beat New Zealand but you did it ! That day, I realized that the new slogan of the team « One Team, One Country » was not for fun. It has a real meaning.
Journalist: What do you mean ?
Mandela: When I gave the cup to Pienaar at the end of the game I told him « Thank you very much for what you have done for our country » and I meant it, I was convinced . They really did something great …
Pienaar: …and I replied that it was nothing « compared to what you have done for our country » I meant it too.
Journalist: We all know the green jersey was one of the symbols of apartheid. Is it still one ?
Mandela: It is not false to say that rugby was mainly for Afrikaners, but things won’t change by themselves. People have to change things !
Pienaar: When I heard the stadium shouting « Nelson ! Nelson ! Nelson ! Nelson … » I understood that something was changing. Imagine in the center of a city like Johannesburg people claiming Mandela’s name !
Mandela: As I already said « Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to unite people » What happened, we did it because we were together, united without any racial considerations.
Journalist: For us too, and for the world it was an amazing moment, an historical moment .
Mandela: I really believe that together we are stronger and together we can build a united nation.
Pienaar: I am very proud not only to be a world cup champion but to be part of a country with such a president!
Mandela: Thank you. I would like more people to think that way. I believe they will in the future .Because anyone deserves a better future.
Journalist: Thank you so much for your answers ! And, as a journalist, as a man, as a human I would like to thank you for this great lesson you both gave us.
Pienaar : Thank you
Mandela: Thank you for the invitation.
