In 1803 , Emperor of France Napoleon 1 sold Louisiana , a huge territory West of the Mississippi river to the Americans . US President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and his partner William Clark on an exploration mission to discover a water route to the Pacific Ocean . The American expepedition to the West was intended to study the Indian tribes , botany , geology , Western terrain , landscapes of trappers . An Indian woman , Sacagawea , helped as an interpreter and peacemaker , as she negotiated for horses and food along the way . All along the exploration , in their journals , Lewis , Clark and their companions drew maps of the land , described the natural wonders and encountered the people of Western America .
